The bushfire crisis: how to help

by | Jan 6, 2020 | Wildlife rescue | 4 comments

The internet and social media is awash with hundreds of ways to held wildlife and humans in this bushfire crisis, this time of climate emergency. This post is a summary, while by no means exhaustive, hopefully it will help guide you. I will be adding to it!

I have written it with a Victorian focus, but have included national information where I can. I have avoided pictures of dead, dying or burnt animals – I can’t stand it!! I have not included how to help firefighters, but I do have a few links/ organisations for helping humans.

Donations directly to wildlife shelters

Some people prefer to donate directly to individual shelters, such as Goongerah Wombat Orphanage: https://www.facebook.com/GoongerahWombatOrphanage/

GWO were luckily enough to have their property defended by a hero neighbour, however it is going to take a lot to rebuild. The surrounding buch has been burnt to the ground & there is no word on how any of the wildlife, or released wombats, have fared.

Wallabia Wildlife Shelter
> Rena and Joe evacuated Goongerah on 28 December with three baby kangaroos, a baby wombat and a possum. They then had to evacuate again from Sarsfield the following day and Joe’s mums was heavily impacted by fire. They have lost their house and caravan in the fires that hit Goongerah on 30 December.

        Hi Tanya

The fire recovery webpages on the Victorian Landcare Gateway https://www.landcarevic.org.au/resources/fire-recovery/ contain links to a wide range of practical fire recovery land management information for landowners on livestock, fencing, pastures, soils, weeds, native vegetation, riparian areas and erosion, wildlife, horticulture, assistance and support services available, and fire research and reports.

The information in these links comes from a wide range of sources including Agriculture Victoria, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), VicEmergency, Country Fire Authority (CFA), local governments, Catchment Management Authorities, agencies, and several Landcare networks etc.

These fire recovery resources webpages were first compiled by Victorian Landcare Program staff at the DEWLP after the Mickleham-Kilmore fire, north of Melbourne in February 2014.

In January 2020 these webpages have been updated, revised and added to so that they provide useful and current land management information for landowners impacted by fire, including the 2019/20 fires in East Gippsland and North East Victoria.

As additional fire recovery land management-related information becomes available it will be linked to one of these webpages. If any of the links aren’t working, or if there is other fire recovery land management-related information or webpages that could be included on these webpages please send the information to John Robinson via [email protected] Thank you.

        Kind regards

        John Robinson
